The silver lining for Seattle is they got to the bullpen, once again knocking out a dominant Astros starter before six innings of work. But disaster struck again in the bottom half of the frame for the M’s as after two quick outs, a flare of a pop fly found the outfield between Julio Rodriguez and Adam Frazier only to bring up the dreaded Yordan Alvarez. Just like he did Tuesday, Alvarez crushed a two-run homer into the Crawford Boxes to take a 3-2 lead. Gut-check time for the Mariners now.

Crawford worked a five-pitch walk. With one on and out out, Abreu struck out Julio Rodriguez. Rafael Montero came in to pitch to Ty France, who also worked an out. But Yordan Alvarez — who else? — made a nice running catch to rob Eugenio Suarez of a hit and end another Mariners threat. Seattle has now stranded five runners in the past two innings. Luis Castillo again rebounded well from the previously two-run inning.

Castillo fired a first-pitch 94-mph sinker well off the plate that Alvarez fouled off. Knowing he didn’t need to throw a strike to get Alvarez to swing, Castillo didn’t. He threw another 98-mph sinker away. But this pitch was about an inch closer to the plate than the previous one, and that’s all Alvarez needed. He launched a line drive into the short porch known as the Crawford Boxes for the go-ahead two-run homer, turning a one-run deficit into a one-run lead and eventual 4-2 victory for the Astros.
