We could’ve given ourselves a bit more distance, we were a little too tight, and they got a run on us. Just some small details, I don’t think it’s confidence, that was just a little bit of focus at a key moment, we lost a little bit of our confidence and focus when (Reece) Brown went off, we’ve got to be able to overcome that and adjust to get back on the game. How much of a blow was it not to have the experience of Jordan Moore-Taylor and Connor Wickham involved on Tuesday? If you look at it, Jordan (Moore-Taylor), Connor Wickham, and Reece Brown to a degree are three of the most experienced and influential players that we had against Bolton.
We’ve gone from one extreme to the other, from keeping a clean sheet against Bolton to looking quite vulnerable against Peterborough so we need a bit more consistency in our defensive structure. It hasn’t helped how we haven’t had the back three or five weekly at the moment so there’s been a lack of continuity of the players playing together, but we have to keep working really hard at it, we know that if we give a little bit of space and time at this level, we’re getting punished, and we’re finding that out the hard way. Are you happy with the options you’ve got back there? Jacob Jones going out on loan this week – he’s another playing you could’ve put in there.

We’ve got options back there; we just now need to get a bit of consistency with them. It was quite a tough moment to bring Harry Boyes into the game for his debut, would you have still made that choice if it wasn’t for an injury to Kyle McAllister? Maybe not necessarily for Kyle. We could’ve moved him into a different role, Kyle is a really intelligent player, he can play a variety of roles on the pitch.

Two of them were missing and Brown came off injured, so of course, we miss them, but we had to look at the bigger picture as well. We couldn’t put Connor and Jordy at risk of picking something up, so we had to protect them a little bit. I still felt like we had the game for the first 30 minutes, we showed them that we had the capabilities, but we let the game go out of our hands, and our control, but it’s good to have them back and we can hope they will have a positive impact tomorrow. 29 goals so far conceded in 13 League One matches, does that concern you? Yes, it concerns me enormously. We don’t want to be so easy to score against, that goes without saying.

Ian Burchnall ahead of Port Vale awayA 4-1 defeat against a really tough opponent in Peterborough mid-week, what lessons can you learn? I think that the game plan to start was good, we started the game in a positive way for the first 30 minutes. I felt like the crowd was quiet, we were very disciplined, we didn’t give up many chances, and we had a few chances ourselves. The disappointing thing was the goal came via a set play - that was a bit soft. We got ourselves back in it but we kind of gave away the momentum, so a bit of game management at key times when we got our first goal, we needed to come in at 1-1, and when we didn’t, coming out and allowing them to get again, a cheap goal, a long ball from a set-piece and flick on, so I think we did a lot of good things in the first 30 minutes but we have to maintain focus for longer.
The options are what we’ve got. I would be happier if Jordan Moore-Taylor was fit every game, and Dokes (Udoka Godwin-Malife) was fit, that would give even more strength, but we have Harry Boyes coming back, and Baily Cargill returned. I’m happier than I was a few weeks ago when it did feel very short back there, I think the fact Boyes is back allowed to get Jacob Jones a month’s loan out, some valuable match experience.
I felt it was important Harry got some minutes in his legs because he’s done a lot of good work on the training ground but there haven’t been any minutes available for him. At that point in the game, it was a good opportunity to get him 25 minutes and that puts him in a better position for this weekend. Port Vale are a very aggressive team to play against, if everyone was fit though, you’d probably target this game as a victory, wouldn’t you? I don’t make any assumptions in this league, but Port Vale away is a tough game at any moment but we’ve got players returning, and we know they’ve had a good start to the season.
The game plan was working, and the goal came from a set piece. Is it more of a mental thing? The game completely changed after that, didn’t it? It’s a little organisation, I think at the same time when the set-piece comes in, they’re smart, they block our zone man, and our marking could’ve been a little bit better.
